Variations of propagation velocity of the ELF electromagnetic pulses
along the Lovozero – Barentsburg path
The paper discusses the results of measurements of the velocity of electromagnetic impulses produced by remote lightnings in the ELF range acquired on the Lovozero – Barentsburg path. The ELF receivers installed in the observatories Lovozero and Barentsburg and data processing methods have been described. To couple the results of measurements and the lower ionosphere conductivity profile along the propagation path the model with double-exponential conductivity profile which parameters were estimated using the IRI-2012 has been applied. It has been shown that the measured variations of the propagation velocity are closely correlated with those calculated by the IRI model with a correlation coefficient of 0.89, and a small time shift of 0.9 hour. Variations of velocity are controlled by the lower ionosphere conductivity profile near the propagation path, that makes possible to monitor alterations of the lower ionosphere at high latitudes.
